Inside Sparkling Hill Resort: serene Canadian reset in British Columbia

Unwind and decompress at a romantic, lakeside North American spa and retreat.

Perched on a rocky granite bluff overlooking Okanagan Lake in British Columbia, Sparkling Hill Resort’s rural setting was a wonderful way to unwind at the end of a hectic year. Winter sharpens the sense of distance from everyday life: the lake turns steel-grey and snow blankets the rolling landscape of the surrounding Predator Ridge, one of Canada’s most famous golf courses.

Known for its spa-led focus, this adults-only resort effortlessly encourages a slower pace. Swarovski crystal displays appear throughout, including in each room, adding a stylish sparkle without overwhelming the quiet atmosphere.

Nourishment and cosy comfort with a view

In room champagne and mountain views, Sparkling Hill Resort.

Guest rooms are spacious, contemporary and functional. Ours featured floor-to-ceiling windows and a large soaking tub by the window. These overlook stunning panoramic mountain and lake views that shift with changing light and winter snowfall. At night, quiet serenity descends, with silky sheets, plush duvets and lighting that subtly enhanced crystal accents. There was ample space to spend lazy afternoons playing board games and sipping champagne.

On-site dining at PeakFine restaurant focuses on classic, European-influenced menus rather than holiday-specific fare. Complimentary à la carte breakfasts various vegetarian and gluten-free options. A three-course Christmas Day meal stood out for its seafood: buttery scallops were perfectly seared, and the mussel sauce was so good we ordered extra focaccia to soak it up. Desserts were delicious and beautifully plated, with an emphasis on fresh fruit aligning with the resort’s health-conscious approach.

Wellness-led

Outdoor infinity pool at the spa, Sparking Hill Resort.

The spa is the clear centrepiece at Sparking Hill. While white hallways and treatment areas lean clinical, the cold rooms, steam rooms and saunas (that include herbal, salt, panoramic and crystal themed) were more inviting – clean, dimly lit and well designed, each just large enough to feel comfortable. The 40,000 sq foot KurSpa facility also includes lush indoor pools, a large hot tub with powerful massage jets, serenity rooms for lounging or reading, a well-appointed gym and fitness studio, and a year-round heated outdoor infinity pool. The spa observes a European-style, clothing-optional hour from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m for those who refer to get (momentarily) naked.

In winter, the outdoor pool becomes a highlight. Couples linger in the warm water, some in wool toques, the Canadian word for the quintessential knit cap, talking quietly or joking with one another as large snowflakes dissolve on contact.

Walking trails around the property offer easy access to fresh air between sessions. And wellness packages include week-long Serenity Retreats as well as Relationship or Weightloss focused programs. The facility draws younger, health-conscious locals and tourists, but the steady flow of visitors did little to disrupt the experience. Guests love the resort’s quiet-talking culture, unlike more social spa environments such as those in Whistler or Quebec.

Why it works

Sparkling Hill isn’t about packing in activities, and it’s best enjoyed without plans to leave the property. While wineries, boating and biking trails attract crowds to the area in warmer months, the resort’s strength lies in its setting, epic views and the ease of doing very little. For travellers seeking an escape at any time of year, it offers a quiet kind of luxury that feels restorative rather than overly indulgent.
