Curated Travel Guides to Unexpected Places

Hambara

Sofia

In a city filled with hidden bars, Hambara is arguably Sofia’s ‘worst-kept secret’ – and also its most atmospheric. Tucked away in a residential courtyard, this candlelit bar has evolved from an exclusive communist-era hangout for Bulgaria’s cultural elite into a cherished space where artists, philosophers and hip tourists converge.

Finding Hambara is part of its charm – and its challenge. With no signage, website, or electricity, visitors must locate an unmarked wooden door in a dimly lit passageway and knock loudly to enter. Inside, hundreds of precariously placed candles light up the two-level space, while a banister-free staircase adds to the delightfully dangerous ambiance. The bar’s simplicity is deliberate – cash only, with a straightforward menu of wines, beers, and mixed drinks. While it may no longer require a password for entry as it did during communist times, Hambara maintains its air of mystery.
