Must-See Museums and Spaces

The Gulbenkian Museum

Gulbekian Modern Museum
Gulbekian, the Modern Museum.

The iconic Gulbenkian Museum, a Brutalist building, known for its exquisite collection of antique and modern art, is currently undergoing an exciting transformation. There’s the must visit to the main building housing its rich permanent classical collection covering Grecian to Islamic arts and artefacts, but don’t miss out on the Gulkenkian’s Modernist arm a new contemporary building and home to the museum’s exciting Modern and Contemporary Collection. The Gulbenkian’s peaceful gardens are also respite in the heat of the summer, you’ll find locals and visitors alike lounging on chairs on the lawn, often with a glass of vinho branco – a perfect retreat in the heart of the city.

The MAAT

Located along the Tagus River, the MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology) is one of Lisbon’s most striking contemporary landmarks. Designed by British architect Amanda Levete, its undulating, futuristic silhouette is a masterpiece in itself, seamlessly blending with the waterfront and offering panoramic views from its rooftop terrace. Inside, the museum hosts a dynamic mix of contemporary art exhibitions, interactive installations, and thought-provoking explorations of technology and design.

MACAM

The newest addition to Lisbon’s art scene, MACAM, located in between Belem and Alcantara, has opened to much acclaim. With its sleek minimalist design and cutting-edge exhibitions, it’s already establishing itself as a major player in contemporary art dialogue. If you want an in-depth experience, you can book a private tour and discover their inaugural exhibitions in a more intimate setting.

LX Factory

LX Factory, Lisbon
Migration, LX Factory.

For a concentrated street art experience, visit the LX Factory, where industrial buildings have been transformed into a creative hub filled with vibrant murals, installations, and pop-up galleries. See work such as the famous giant bee by the street artist Artur Bordallo II, whose work can be found here and all over Lisbon. Lisbon’s open-air galleries are, to some, as impressive as some of its more traditional spaces. The winding streets of Bairro Alto and Alfama are adorned with murals and graffiti by both local and international artists. Keep an eye out for works by Vhils, the Portuguese artist known for his distinctive technique of carving portraits into walls, which has become iconic in Lisbon’s urban landscape.

Albuquerque Foundation

Technically outside of Lisbon, in the neighbouring Sintra, the newly opened Albuquerque Foundation, is worth mentioning because its quite the masterpiece with a tantalizing collection. Just a 30 minute Uber ride away, and located in a beautifully renovated quinta (traditional estate), its modernist new wing is breathtaking, with clean architectural lines set against the historic charm of the estate.

The foundation’s art exhibits change and currently (April 2025) features a solo pavilion dedicated to the works of Theaster Gates, whose opening performance remains one of the highlights of Lisbon’s recent cultural calendar. After exploring the powerful exhibition, take some time to enjoy the lush gardens and the delightful café, which perfectly rounds off the visit.
