Inside Centralbadet: Stockholm’s opulent Art Nouveau spa and bathhouse

Swedish spa and sauna culture becomes a cultural experience at this renovated heritage outfit in the capital’s centre.

Tucked just off busy Drottninggatan, Centralbadet in central Stockholm feels made for deep Swedish winters. Push past the snow and street noise and you’re suddenly in a candlelit, art nouveau cocoon of warm water, tiled arches and slow time. In a city where daylight can vanish by mid-afternoon in winter, this clean, century‑old classic bathhouse becomes less a spa and more a sanity‑saving ritual, wrapping you in steam, heat and soft light while the temperature outside sinks below zero.

Lounge and relax amongst the plants in the pool hall, Centralbadet.

Health and wellness aside, design lovers will be spoiled. Centralbadet is a time capsule of early 20th‑century Stockholm: sinuous Art Nouveau ironwork, stained glass, decorative tiles and that indoor pool hall that could be a vintage film set. This Salongsbad, is grand, green and regal; and also were Swedish champion swimmer Arne Borg used to train. Between laps, don’t forget to relax in one of the alcoves, and admire the lush plants, light through stained glass, and original details like the floral motifs and curved balconies. It’s these that turn this from a functional pool into a living piece of architectural history. In mid‑winter, with candles lit poolside, steam rising under the high ceiling and snow piling up outside, it’s one of the loveliest spots in the Stockholm to thaw out.

Take to the more modern part of the spa where a Roman-style bathing circuit is at the heart: thermal pools, a classic hydrotherapy bath and cold plunges that encourage the hot‑cold‑hot rhythm beloved in the Nordics. That contrast isn’t just theatre; it stimulates circulation, helps flush out metabolic waste and can ease winter‑stiff muscles and joints, especially if you’ve been pounding frozen pavements all day. Follow it up with a slow float in one of the warmer pools and you’ll feel your body settle into gentle relaxation.

Centralbadet’s themed saunas and steam rooms double down on the wellness hit – go in with just your towel, swimmers are not allowed in this (mixed) section. A classic dry sauna improves blood flow and supports recovery, while crystal and aromatherapy steam infuses the air with rosemary plant oils that can open the lungs, clear sinuses and take the edge off seasonal colds. Settle in front of one of infrared-style panels outside the sauna, linked with easing muscle soreness, longevity and skin health. Rotate between each room, cool off briefly, then curl up on a lounger – a Scandinavian spa “circuit training” for the nervous system. Whilst massages, treatments and yoga classes are also on offer here, an afternoon spent just in the bathhouse facilities are more than enough of a treat.
