An eccentric lakeside castle stay in Skåne, where French-Renaissance fantasy meets modern Nordic dining.
Häckeberga Slott is the sort of hotel that rewards a willingness to suspend disbelief. Reached by a narrow causeway and seemingly floating on a small island in southern Sweden, this 19th-century castle trades conventional Scandinavian minimalism for rich colour, theatrical interiors and a distinctly romantic sense of remove. Just 30 minutes from Malmö, it is an unexpectedly transportive weekend address: part country-house escape, part gastronomic retreat, part grown-up fairytale.
A grand entrance and heritage
The journey is an essential part of the experience. Häckeberga Slott sits on one of the islets of Häckebergasjön, a lake surrounded by the Häckeberga Nature Reserve outside Genarp in Skåne. Beech woodland, open fields and tranquil water create a suitably cinematic drive-in before the castle’s pale, turreted outline comes into view.
The property is close enough to Malmö, Lund and Copenhagen for a one- or two-night escape, but its island definitely setting supplies the illusion of greater distance and escape. This is not wilderness in the Swedish north; but an intimate and civilised pocket of countryside, designed for long walks, pre-dinner drinks and a complete change of pace from city life.
The current castle was built between 1873 and 1875 for Tönnes Wrangel von Brehmer. Designed by Helgo Zettervall, one of Sweden’s most prominent 19th-century architects, it was conceived in a French Renaissance style: hence the romantic towers, elaborate roofline and sense of borrowed continental grandeur.
The estate itself has a deeper history. Häckeberga dates back to the 14th century, and an earlier fortified castle occupied the site before it was destroyed during the Scanian War. Its present-day incarnation is therefore not simply a decorative castle hotel; it is a revival of a long-established estate in one of Skåne’s more atmospheric landscapes
Fantastical jewel box design
Expect the opposite of Nordic restraint here. Häckeberga’s public spaces are characterful, embellished and deliberately dramatic, combining antiques, artwork, deep-toned fabrics, ornate objects and an eclectic collection of decorative references. The hotel’s own language points to Alice in Wonderland and One Thousand and One Nights, both useful shorthand for its dreamlike, jewel box maximalist approach.
It is a style that will not appeal to travellers seeking a muted, design-led sanctuary. But that is precisely the point. Häckeberga does not try to be a polished international luxury brand transplanted into a castle; it embraces the pleasure of eccentricity.
There is a welcome sense that each room has its own personality, and that the hotel wants guests to look around rather than retreat immediately behind a neutral palette. With 27 rooms and a total of 54 beds, Häckeberga Slott remains pleasingly small-scale. And despite the castle not being small, the mood becomes more private-house than grand hotel – informal in spirit, though unmistakably theatrical.
Seasonal immersion and refined local dining
Time is spent in the castle. You can hire row boats on the lake, or use the hotel bikes to cycle in the surrounding nature reserve. The atmosphere changes with the seasons. In summer, the lake and gardens provide the setting for slow afternoons outdoors; the hotel highlights walking trails, lawn croquet and kubb as part of the experience. In colder months, the compact size of the castle becomes an advantage, making it feel cosier and more enveloping.
Before dinner, a cocktail in the castle bar is a must, we opted for the terrace overlooking the estate and lake. Inside, a roaring fire, a darkly dressed lounge, the property does not demand that guests dress for dinner, but it certainly makes the case for doing so.
Dinner is the heart of a stay here, we opted for the multiple course set meal. The restaurant, led by chef Mattias Caesar Jönsson, centres on modern Nordic cooking with a clear emphasis on regional produce, seasonality, sustainability and kitchen craft. Local vegetables (some even foraged closeby), forest game and house-preserved ingredients are among the foundations of the menu, while the tasting-menu format is positioned as a low-waste, landscape-led experience.
Why it matters
Häckeberga Slott is best approached as an experience rather than a conventional luxury hotel in Sweden – a rare jewel of a hotel in the country. Its appeal lies in the theatre of its location, the spirited interiors, the intimacy of a boutique property and a kitchen that gives Skåne’s produce a proper sense of occasion.
Come for a romantic weekend, a beautiful summer break, autumnal food escape or an imaginative alternative to the sleek city hotels of Malmö and Copenhagen. The castle may be close to the city, but once the lake, woodland and turreted façade take over, it feels like a much more dreamlike complete departure.
