When whisky wears couture: Johnnie Walker Vault taps Olivier Rousteing

Priced at US$20,000 per bottle and limited to just 25 per season, Couture Expression is a wake up for the senses.

Whisky and haute couture. Not the most obvious of pairings, yet when Johnnie Walker –the world’s most famous Scotch brand — opens its illustrious Vault in Edinburgh to a fashion designer like Olivier Rousteing, magic happens. The renowned French creative director, tenured at Balmain since 2011, has partnered with whisky legend and Johnnie Walker Master Blender Dr. Emma Walker to create Couture Expression, a limited-edition collection of whiskies that reimagines blending as a seasonal art form. The collaboration, launching soon, takes whisky blending into uncharted territory.

This brand is not the first of whiskies to venture into the luxury creative cross collaboration realm — the likes of Glenfiddich, Mortlach, Dalmore and Macallan have partnered with renowned artists and designers for limited-edition releases. Mortlach took on design icon Philippe Stark as its Creative director in 2023 for example. Dalmore collaborated with Japanese architectural legend Kengo Kumo for their Luminaries edition, British-Ghanain architect David Adjaye created bottle and case for Gordon & MacPhail’s 80-year-old whisky. And Macallan’s many collaborations stretch from work with artist Sir Peter Blake to Bentley Motors.

The fashion and whisky pairing however, feels genuinely quite fresh, and shows a pivot for those at Johnnie Walker. Julie Bramham, Managing Director of Diageo Luxury Group explains that exploring the brand’s Vault (housed in an old underground bank vault in Edinburgh, and by invite only) has allowed “us to make our mark on the world of luxury spirits in an exciting new way.”

As for Rousteing, it’s been an emotional journey. “What started as a collaboration to create one special release became a creative exploration of four seasons, just like a couture collection,” he says.

Each whisky begins with the same ‘heart’, including rare ghost whiskies from Brora and Port Dundas. Then Dr. Walker weaves in Rousteing’s personal narratives and emotions by layering rare liquids from the Vault into each of the four blends. Each blend — Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter — captures the essence of a season.

Spring is floral and refreshing, with rare whiskies like a 1985 Cragganmore and a 1978 Port Ellen setting the tone. Summer bursts with tropical vibrancy, while Fall leans into bold, textured smokiness from a 1978 Port Ellen. Winter, the richest of the quartet, envelops you in the warm embrace of Islay malts and mulled wine sweetness.

No couture collection is complete without exquisite design and these decanters made from Baccarat crystal encased in metallic drapery. The Rousteing-designed bottles echo his signature style — structured yet fluid, then topped with a dramatic metallic wing stopper.

The collaboration reflects luxury’s evolution. Such cross-industry moves create new narratives that aim to move consumers. Today, it’s not just acquiring expensive things, but rather seeking rarified, story-driven experiences and nosediving into cultures and communities. This union of flavour and fashion doesn’t come cheap. Limited to 25 bottles sold globally per season, at US$20,000 each, this is rare, luxurious whisky for collectors and connoisseurs – available pre-launch availablity at Harrods in London, as well as other locations.
