Luna Azul promises private compartments, panoramic lounges and a dawn arrival in one of the country’s most dramatic regions
Japan Railways has announced one of its most ambitious new services in years: a luxury overnight sleeper train connecting Tokyo with the rugged Tohoku region, turning what was once a purely practical journey into something worth savouring.
Named Luna Azul – Spanish for ‘Blue Moon’ – the 10-car train will glide twice weekly between Tokyo’s Shinagawa Station and Aomori, at the northern tip of Honshu. Launched by East Japan Railway Company (JR East), it’s scheduled to enter service in early 2027 and promises to revive the romance of rail travel in a country that has long since traded sleeper carriages for bullet trains.
All seating has been stripped out and replaced entirely with private compartments. Solo travellers, couples and families are each catered for, with configurations ranging from intimate single cabins to spacious four-person suites.
Premium compartments feature floor-to-ceiling interiors and L-shaped sofas that fold flat into beds, with dedicated luggage storage throughout. At the centre of the train sits a dedicated lounge car: wide panoramic windows on both sides, drinks and snacks available, and the kind of unhurried atmosphere that is increasingly hard to find in modern travel.
The Tokyo-Tohoku overnight route runs spring through autumn. Come winter, Luna Azul reconfigures into a seven-car daytime service running instead to Gunma Prefecture’s Kusatsu Onsen — one of Japan’s most celebrated hot spring resorts, and a destination that offers its own particular kind of luxury. Fares and full timetables are yet to be announced.
