Porto is a jewel of a city – Portugal’s second, but not to be overshadowed by Lisbon, the capital. Compact and walkable, it’s a well-kept secret, from the terraced banks of the Douro River to the wild, windswept coastline where the river meets the Atlantic.

As the sun sets, a waterfront and its hilly surrounds come alive with bars offering stunning views, delicious drinks, and lively atmosphere. Porto’s charms are best enjoyed alfresco, so we strongly suggest you avoid depressing rainy months. Whether you’re in the mood for a casual “fino” beer, a sophisticated cocktail, or a taste of the region’s famous port wine, these bars offer spectacular views as well as drinks. Here are seven of the best that you shouldn’t miss.

Dick’s Bar at The Yeatman Hotel

Dick’s Bar the Yeatman Hotel, Porto

A bastion of old school sophistication perched high above the Douro River, Dick’s Bar at The Yeatman Hotel is effortlessly luxurious, with what my local friend called “the best views of Porto”. Named after the hotel’s founder, Dick Yeatman, this elegant bar exudes old-world glamour, with plush armchairs, a roaring fireplace inside for winter, and floor-to-ceiling windows framing Porto’s riverfront skyline.

But as alluring as the interior ism the terrace outside is magnificent. The bar is renowned for an impressive wine list that celebrates Portugal’s finest vintages, including an enviable selection of rare ports — the owners of the hotel are after all in the business.

The cocktail menu is equally enticing, with mixologists crafting both classic and inventive creations such as the “Yeatman’s Manhattan”. Pair your drink with nibbles that showcase the region’s culinary heritage, like hams or artisanal cheeses. Though undeniably luxe, Dick’s Bar remains warm and welcoming, making it an ideal spot to impress guests and romantic evenings. I personally always go for sunset aperitifs.

Bosco

Tucked away in Porto’s leafy heart, Bosco is a bar that feels like a secret garden party among a hip, young, international crowd. Set within a serene, tree-canopied courtyard overlooking the terraced Virtudes gardens, it offers a welcome respite from the city’s historical old town bustle. The atmosphere is effortlessly chic: think rattan loungers, striped parasols, and the gentle clink of glasses beneath fairy-lit branches. The vibe could be described as a Soho House-inspired. Bosco’s restaurant opens for dinners, with a menu that is a celebration of modern Portuguese and continental flavours, however the garden bar outside is where it really happens — open from lunch time with plenty of inventive cocktails and a lovely wine selection.

As dusk settles, the space transforms: DJs spin mellow beats, and the garden pulses with a buzzy energy. Whether you’re sipping a Negroni at sunset or enjoying live music under the stars, beautiful Bosco captures the essence of Porto’s laid-back chic. Lush greenery and modern decor make for a vibrant yet serene ambiance. Enjoy panoramic views of the river and city from the garden.

Lapa Lapa

Lapa Lapa restaurant and bar, Foz, Porto

Lapa Lapa is a vibey restaurant and bar known for its lively outdoor atmosphere and excellent cocktails. Situated right on the beach in Foz (the poshest area of Porto), it has fantastic views of the dramatic coastline and Atlantic ocean. It’s an extremely popular spot for both locals and tourists, so booking during peak times and summer season is recommended. The bar is famous for its creative drink menu, which includes a variety of cocktails made with fresh, local ingredients — we have a particular soft spot for their delicious caipirinhas.

There’s a welcoming beach chic vibe at Lapa Lapa. Kick back here and enjoy lazy sunny days and the most beautiful sunsets. It’s also a personal favourite for people watching as families, chic couples and sporty locals pass by throughout the day. This venue quickly gets packed in the summer seasons and on fair weather days, so try and go early to ensure you nab the best spot. On a hot day, bring swimwear and a towel — at Lapa Lapa you’re literally steps from the lovely Foz beaches, so a leisurely dip and lounge is a great way to work up a thirst and an appetite.

Rooftop Santa Catarina

Perched atop the La Vie Porto Baixa shopping centre, Rooftop Santa Catarina is a hidden gem, right in the centre of town, offering panoramic views over Porto’s terracotta rooftops and the distant Douro River. This fun bar, popular with locals as well as travellers, gives breathtaking panoramic views of Porto compact but pretty skyline.

This buzzy rooftop bar is the perfect spot to unwind over cocktails as you watch the sunset over the iconic Ribeira district. We especially like the refreshing Sakuzo or Positano concoctions for balmy summer evenings. The menu is a delightful mix of traditional Brazilian, Mediterranean, and Portuguese flavours. With live music often in the air, it’s a great place to unwind, relax but on busier nights, things can easily turn into a full blown celebration.

Angel’s Share Wine Bar

Located in the impressive WOW (World of Wine) complex in Vila Nova de Gaia, Angel’s Share is a stylish and sophisticated venue that opened in 2020. The bar’s name refers to the portion of wine that evaporates during the distillation process and is apparently left “for the angels”, as the vineyards and makers say. This is a poetic nod to its extensive selection of Portuguese wines, including rare Ports and Madeiras. Spoil yourself by complementing drinks with tasty snacks like gyozas, nachos, and charcuterie.

The interior is all plush seating and comfortable furniture, setting a charming ambiance. Meanwhile the outdoor terrace is ideal for enjoying the epic scenery on warmer days. These views of Porto make it an ideal spot for a romantic evening with well-curated local wines and ports. The owners of the whole WOW complex also own several famous local wine and port brands so the selection is extensive. Live music performances on Friday and Saturday nights create a vibrant atmosphere, making Angel’s Share a must-visit for wine enthusiasts and those just looking for a memorable Porto evening.

Espaço Porto Cruz

Located in the historic heart of Vila Nova de Gaia, Espaço Porto Cruz is more than just a bar; it’s a vistors’ cultural hub and building dedicated to celebrating the region’s iconic port wine. The venue, on the front line of Gaia’s riverside, boasts sweeping views of the Douro River, boats and the Porto skyline — and is a firm favourite for tourists.

On warm evenings, DJs often spin dance music on the rooftop bar, offering one of the best venues in the central Gaia strip for a bit of a giddy party atmosphere. Indulge in a wide selection of wines, including fine port wines and rather unique port-infused cocktails. The bar also offers expertly paired Portuguese tapas. With occasional live music on the roof and workshops and a restaurant on the different floors, Espaço Porto Cruz is fun and touristy, but provides a great introduction to the city’s local culture.

Wine Quay Bar

The Wine Quay Bar

For those who want to sip while overlooking the Douro River in a super intimate setting, Wine Quay Bar is a must-visit. This cute, rustic, hole-in-the-wall venue features a carefully curated selection of wines, focusing on local varieties that showcase the best of Portuguese viticulture. A word of advice, last time we visited, they only took payment in cash.

The atmosphere is warm, unpretentious and inviting, making it a perfect spot for going solo, a romantic evening or a casual gathering with a small group of friends. Knowledgeable staff, led by the charismatic Filipa Fernandes, ensures that guests really feel at home. Sitting balcony-style facing the stunning river views is divine — sip delicious wines whilst nibbling on a charcuterie board.
