Heritage rail meets modern luxury in Australian Food Bowl

Australian tourism operator Journey Beyond has expanded its luxury portfolio with the acquisition of heritage rail company Vintage Rail Journeys, launching its first tour through New South Wales’ agricultural heartland this week.

The inaugural journey under the new ownership departed Sydney’s historic Central Station on Easter Monday, treating international guests to a champagne reception before embarking on a five-day exploration of the Riverina region, known as Australia’s premier food-growing territory.

“Vintage Rail Journeys’ first adventure for 2025 explores vibrant regional New South Wales. It’s the most scenic way to experience the region,” said David Donald, Journey Beyond’s Executive General Manager of Rail. “Guests for the first time will now enjoy all-inclusive meals and beverages in our dining carriage, lovingly crafted by our onboard chef with fresh, local ingredients.”

The meticulously restored vintage carriages transport guests through landscapes rarely seen by international visitors, with stops at historic country towns and acclaimed food producers. Highlights include artisanal cheese tasting in Coolamon, wine experiences in Griffith, and a journey on the spectacular Zig Zag Railway in the Blue Mountains.

The four-night journey combines luxury accommodation aboard the heritage train with carefully curated local experiences, offering international travellers an authentic glimpse into rural Australian life beyond the typical tourist trail.

While the inaugural Riverina Rail Tour has sold out, Journey Beyond is now taking bookings for its North Coast Rail Tour, which showcases Australia’s Pacific coastline from Sydney to subtropical Port Macquarie.
