The hotelier’s first-ever safari property features 20 treetop tented suites along Kenya’s Sand River, while championing sustainable tourism and Maasai cultural heritage.
Luxury hotel giant Ritz-Carlton is making its first venture into the safari market, announcing an intimate tented camp in Kenya’s Masai Mara that promises to reshape high-end wildlife tourism in East Africa.
Opening this August, the property marks a significant shift for the brand, swapping its signature urban sophistication for a more adventurous — though no less luxurious — approach. The camp’s 20 tented suites, each featuring private plunge pools, will perch among treetops along the Sand River, offering front-row seats to one of nature’s most spectacular shows: the Great Migration.
“The Masai Mara is one of the most spectacular destinations in the world and we look forward to introducing The Ritz-Carlton’s first safari experience and signature hospitality to this extraordinary setting,” said Helen Leighton, Vice President, Luxury Brands, EMEA. “From breathtaking wildlife encounters to personalised service in the heart of the savannah, every moment is designed to inspire.”
The timing of the launch is strategic, coinciding with peak migration season when millions of wildebeest and zebra cross between Tanzania and Kenya. However, the camp’s appeal extends beyond wildlife viewing. Each suite comes with a personal ‘Encholiek’ — a Maasai term for ‘one who walks with you’ — offering butler service with a cultural twist.
Local Maasai communities have been integral to the development, from construction to guiding services, suggesting a deeper commitment to the region than just another luxury outpost. With rates starting at US$3,500 per night, it’s certainly pitched at the ultra-luxury market, but early bookings suggest the combination of Ritz-Carlton service and safari adventure is striking a chord with wealthy travelers.
