Robb Report’s 2026 ranking of the 50 greatest luxury hotels on earth makes a compelling case for looking well beyond the obvious
Forget the grand European palaces and the clifftop resorts that double as film sets. According to Robb Report’s 2026 ranking of the 50 greatest luxury hotels on earth, the pinnacle of the form is currently found in a remote river valley in Nepal, at a property most of the world hasn’t heard of yet.
Shinta Mani Mustang, a 29-room retreat designed by Bill Bensley in Nepal’s Kali Gandaki River Valley, takes the top spot. Built from local Baglung stone with uninterrupted mountain views from every room, the property only opened in August 2023 — making its ascent to number one all the more striking. Guests can go horseback riding, explore ancient Buddhist monasteries, trek high-altitude trails or submit to traditional Tibetan healing therapies. Luggage, should you need it carried, goes up by mule.
Second place goes to Rwanda’s Singita Kwitonda, a lodge that shares its physical boundary with Volcanoes National Park — and by extension, a third of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. The night before a trek, staff kit guests out head to toe and send them off into the mist. They return to a heated plunge pool in each of the eight suites. Scotland’s Hope Lodge rounds out the top three, a lochside Highland retreat that makes the case, convincingly, that you don’t need palm trees to make a list like this.
Japan’s Park Hyatt Tokyo, immortalised by Lost in Translation and freshly reopened after a 19-month renovation, with 26-foot floor-to-ceiling windows, Mount Fuji views and rooms panelled in Hokkaido water elm, claims fourth. The rest of the top ten is equally well-travelled: India, Italy, Paris, Panama, Malta and London’s Claridge’s, which has been having quite the moment of late.
The list is curated by a panel of 24 luxury travel advisors and selected on expert judgement alone – no public voting or algorithms. Which may explain why it looks so different from most rankings.
