Robert De Niro’s acclaimed Nobu Hospitality is bringing its signature blend of luxury, design and world-class dining to Portugal’s Eastern Algarve, with a new hotel and branded residences at Monte Rei Golf & Country Club set to open in 2029.

Travellers have long found something irresistible about the Algarve’s eastern reaches – that quieter, more contemplative stretch where Portuguese land meets the sea with a certain understated grace. And now, it seems, the world is catching on. Nobu Hospitality, the high-end brand co-founded by Robert De Niro, has announced ambitious plans to transform Monte Rei Golf & Country Club into a year-round luxury destination of considerable ambition.

The development, which will “form the centrepiece of a broader investment programme led by Norfin,” according to a press release, spans more than 400 hectares of countryside near Vila Nova de Caceira. At its heart lies the Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, consistently ranked among Portugal’s finest, where the fairways roll through stunning terrain.

Accommodation will comprise 100 guestrooms and suites, alongside 21,000 square metres of Nobu-branded villas and residences. The signature restaurant – that celebrated fusion of Japanese precision and Peruvian flair – will naturally take centre stage, complemented by wellness facilities and carefully curated leisure activities.

Trevor Horwell, Chief Executive Officer of Nobu Hospitality, described Monte Rei as “a rare combination of natural beauty, privacy and an established reputation for exceptional golf and residential living.” He added in a press release: “We have the opportunity to create a distinctive Nobu destination that feels deeply connected to the Eastern Algarve while delivering the hospitality, dining, design and service for which the brand is known around the world.”

The design team includes DSA Architects and New York’s Rockwell Group, who will work to blend Nobu’s minimalist aesthetic with the region’s architectural character. Whether they can successfully transplant that signature urban sleekness into the dust-and-olive landscape of the Eastern Algarve remains to be seen, but the prospect is certainly intriguing. Ground breaks in 2027, with completion slated for 2029 – assuming, of course, that Portuguese builders operate on a rather more relaxed timetable than their American counterparts.

One hopes that Nobu’s broader ambition extends beyond simply adding another set of pristine fairways and infinity pools. The Algarve already has those in abundance, as well as expat retiree compounds and a growing cohort of destinations like The Strip in Albufeira, catering for those looking for cheap drinks and party carnage. What it truly needs are properties with a true sense of place, and that, one suspects, will be the real challenge.

For those seeking golf, gastronomy and understated luxury, the Eastern Algarve is about to become rather more interesting. Nobu’s global brand recognition will likely attract a new cohort of luxury travellers to the region. Whether Nobu can deliver on its promise of authenticity without sacrificing the slick sheen that made its name is the question that will linger until those first guests check in, three years from now. Here’s hoping the answer is a resounding yes.
