Newly tented: Anantara Golden Triangle launches Mekong Explorer

Forget glamping — the Anantara Golden Triangle has launched their new Mekong Explorer Tent — elevating canvas accommodation to an art form that would make explorers of yesteryear weep with envy.

Perched dramatically where three nations kiss, this hilltop haven offers what must be Southeast Asia’s most extravagant morning view: sip coffee as Chiang Rai (Northern Thailand), then Myanmar and Laos unfold before you. Rescued elephants are ambling through bamboo forests below—nature’s grandest spectacle complete with occasional trumpeting soundtrack.

The two-bedroom retreat combines the romance of expedition-style travel, explorer chic (Jim Thompson fabrics, burnished leather) with shameless luxury (private infinity pools that seem to spill into the Mekong). It’s a little Out of Africa, but with five-star room service.

You’d arrive via traditional longtail boat, before ascending to the lofty perch of the Mekong Explorer Tent. For the truly adventurous, a “Sky Bike” treetop journey promises either exhilaration or an excellent dinner party story, depending on your disposition.

The all-inclusive stay includes gourmet dining—presumably to fortify guests for the exhausting business of watching elephants or other wildlife from private verandas while deciding whether to take another dip. A luxurious jungle retreat that offers seclusion, adventure, gormet dining and importantly, steamy outdoor baths — all for a handsome price of course.

But it may all be worth it for a once-in-a-lifetime experience built around panoramic natural immersion, complete with a guide if needed, into a wilderness that feels like time forgot. Except wilderness was never before this comfortable.
