Landmark payment system allows tourists to use digital currencies for all travel-related expenses, from booking hotels to local shopping.

The Himalayan kingdom known for its Gross National Happiness philosophy, is embracing the digital age in a unique way. In surprise move, Bhutan has launched the world’s first national-level crypto tourism payment system. This initiative, a collaboration between the Department of Tourism, Binance Pay (the payment arm of a cryptocurrency exchange giant), and Bhutan’s fully digital DK Bank, allows travellers to pay for nearly every aspect of their trip using cryptocurrency.

From booking flights, securing visas to paying for hotels, tour guides, and even buying local crafts or fresh produce, over 100 merchants across Bhutan now accept crypto payments via QR codes. The system supports a wide array of cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Binance Coin (BNB), and stablecoins like USDC. Transactions are processed instantly through the Binance app, with no gas fees, and are settled in Bhutanese Ngultrum via DK Bank.

This isn’t just about convenience for tourists and crypto bros; it’s a strategic effort to promote financial inclusion and empower local communities. By enabling small independent vendors to accept digital payments, Bhutan is integrating its traditional economy with innovative, modern financial systems. Damcho Rinzin, Director of the Department of Tourism, emphasized, “This is more than a payment solution—it’s a commitment to innovation, inclusion, and convenience…and empowers even small vendors in remote villages to participate in the tourism economy.”

Richard Teng, CEO of Binance, echoed the sentiment: “We are not only advancing the use of cryptocurrencies in travel but also setting a precedent for how technology can bridge cultures and economies.”

For travelers seeking a unique blend of ancient culture and now, cutting-edge technology, Bhutan offers an unparalleled experience. With a crypto-powered tourism infrastructure, will more visit the Kingdom? Only time will tell.
