Sarajevo is a city where the evidence of different histories — Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, Yugoslav, and more recent — sits within a few minutes’ walk of itself, and where the scars of the 1990s siege are still part of the streetscape rather than something tidied away. It is more complex and more affecting than most European capitals, and the café culture that has always been central to the city’s character remains very much intact.
